DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Marking the Infinite: Contemporary Women Artists from Aboriginal Australia\, the museum is screening two short documentaries Nyapanyapa: The Constant Artist and Bush Plum: The Contemporary Art of Angelina Pwerle. \nBoth artists’ works are included in the Newcomb Art Museum exhibition. \nBush Plum is a visual poem\, capturing the imagery and connection between Angelina Pwerle’s painting and country. Central Australia is a place of extraordinary power and beauty\, the art from this place is a mirror\, a spiritual reflection of beliefs\, of culture\, of country\, of its plants and animals. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with A Shared Space: KAWS\, Karl Wirsum\, and Tomoo Gokita\, the museum is presenting a three-part film series. \nThe Universe of Keith Haring\, directed by Christina Clausen\, is a 2008 documentary exploring the life and work of one of the world’s most popular and significant artists of the 20th century. The film offers an affectionate and deeply personal glimpse into Haring’s life\, from his early years growing up in a small Pennsylvania town to his heyday as a world-renowned artist\, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Madonna\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Yoko Ono and Andy Warhol\, to his AIDS-related death at 31. His extensive body of work—ranging from paintings to sculpture to subway murals—can still be seen worldwide\, and his influence on the ’80s New York art community remains an important piece of history. \nIntroductions and post screening discussion with William Morrow\, Curator and Coordinator of Academic Affairs. \n

SUMMARY:Film Series: Harry Who & The Chicago Imagists
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with A Shared Space: KAWS\, Karl Wirsum\, and Tomoo Gokita\, the museum is presenting a three-part film series. \nHairy Who & The Chicago Imagists is the story of the artists\, including Karl Wirsum\, who emerged from the catalyzing exhibitions at the Hyde Park Art Center from 1966-1973 who would come to be known as the Chicago Imagists. It brings to life the milieu of Chicago in the 1960s\, and also showcases the legacy of the Imagists’ work in contemporary art production today\, from Jeff Koons to Chris Ware. Themes in the narrative include the Imagists’ emergence within the national context of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art\, the rise and fall of taste within art history\, and the uncharacteristic equality afforded to women artists among this Chicago group. Over forty interviews with the artists and a prominent group of critics\, curators\, collectors\, and contemporary artists are featured\, intertwined with a wealth of re-discovered archival footage and photographs.
