SUMMARY:Live Jazz with Courtney Bryan
DESCRIPTION:Building upon the city’s great legacy of live performance and improvisation\, this concert is structured as a site-specific new musical response to the objects on view in “Empire” featuring composer Courtney Bryan from the Tulane Newcomb Department of Music as she interprets the objects on view using an interdisciplinary framework. Free and open to the public! \n\nCourtney Bryan\, a native of New Orleans\, La\, is “a pianist and composer of panoramic interests” (New York Times). Her music ranges from solo works to large ensembles in the new music and jazz idioms\, film scores\, and collaborations with dancers\, visual artists\, writers\, and actors\, and is in conversation with various musical genres\, including jazz and other types of experimental music\, as well as traditional gospel\, spirituals\, and hymns. Focusing on bridging the sacred and the secular\, Bryan’s compositions explore human emotions through sound\, confronting the challenge of notating the feeling of improvisation. Bryan has academic degrees from Oberlin Conservatory (BM)\, Rutgers University (MM)\, and a DMA in music composition from Columbia University of New York\, with advisor George Lewis. She has been an instructor at Columbia University and Oberlin Conservatory\, and a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department for African American Studies at Princeton University. Bryan is currently an Assistant Professor of Music in the Newcomb Department of Music at Tulane University\, and the composer-in-residence with the Jacksonville Symphony. She has two independent recordings\, “Quest for Freedom” (2007) and “This Little Light of Mine” (2010).

SUMMARY:"Is Shakespeare Enough?"
DESCRIPTION:Lecture given by Hillary Eklund\, Associate Professor of English\, Loyola University as part of the First Folio! event. \nThe First Folio! exhibition at the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane — part of the international events planned for 2016 in observance of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death — will feature a First Folio of Shakespeare open to the famous “To be or not to be” soliloquy in Hamlet and\, unique to Tulane’s version of the exhibition\, a rare quarto of Hamlet on loan from Tulane parent and bibliophile\, Stuart Rose. Printed in the large “folio” size\, the First Folio is the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays. It was assembled after Shakespeare’s death in 1616 by two of his fellow actors\, John Heminge and Henry Condell\, and was published in 1623. The First Folio is the only source for eighteen of Shakespeare’s plays\, among these some of his best known and most popular\, including Macbeth\, Julius Caesar\, Twelfth Night\, The Tempest\, and As You Like It\, all of which might otherwise have been lost.

SUMMARY:Fair Use in the Visual Arts: It Just Got Easier
DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Patricia Aufderheide\nProfessor of Communication Studies\, American University\nFounder & Senior Research Fellow\, Center for Media & Social Impact \nWhen and how can you publish a book or journal article without getting permission for illustrations? Can you use unlicensed images in your museum’s promotional materials? What issues do digital exhibitions raise? Can you use others’ work\, legally and ethically\, in making your own? When can you use unlicensed copyrighted material in digitizing and displaying your collection\, in exhibiting and teaching about New Orleans’ creative legacy? \nThe copyright doctrine of fair use is central to all these\, and more questions\, addressed by Aufderheide. She will explain the power of the College Art Association’s most recent resource\, the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts\, and show how it’s already changed visual arts practice. \nFree and open to the public.
