SUMMARY:Live Jazz with Courtney Bryan
DESCRIPTION:Building upon the city’s great legacy of live performance and improvisation\, this concert is structured as a site-specific new musical response to the objects on view in “Empire” featuring composer Courtney Bryan from the Tulane Newcomb Department of Music as she interprets the objects on view using an interdisciplinary framework. Free and open to the public!\n___\nCourtney Bryan\, a native of New Orleans\, La\, is “a pianist and composer of panoramic interests” (New York Times). Her music ranges from solo works to large ensembles in the new music and jazz idioms\, film scores\, and collaborations with dancers\, visual artists\, writers\, and actors\, and is in conversation with various musical genres\, including jazz and other types of experimental music\, as well as traditional gospel\, spirituals\, and hymns. Focusing on bridging the sacred and the secular\, Bryan’s compositions explore human emotions through sound\, confronting the challenge of notating the feeling of improvisation. Bryan has academic degrees from Oberlin Conservatory (BM)\, Rutgers University (MM)\, and a DMA in music composition from Columbia University of New York\, with advisor George Lewis. She has been an instructor at Columbia University and Oberlin Conservatory\, and a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department for African American Studies at Princeton University. Bryan is currently an Assistant Professor of Music in the Newcomb Department of Music at Tulane University\, and the composer-in-residence with the Jacksonville Symphony. She has two independent recordings\, “Quest for Freedom” (2007) and “This Little Light of Mine” (2010).

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Exhibition Tour
DESCRIPTION:Drop by the museum every Third Thursday at noon for a guided tour by museum staff of Newcomb Art Museum’s new art installation EMPIRE created by Fallen Fruit! \nFree and open to the public. Contact Tom Friel at tfriel@tulane.edu with questions.\n—\nWhat is EMPIRE? \nCelebrating the New Orleans tricentennial\, EMPIRE is an art installation by Los Angeles based artists Fallen Fruit (David Allen Burns and Austin Young) commissioned and presented by Newcomb Art Museum\, A Studio in the Woods\, and Pelican Bomb. Through the assembly of over 400 objects\, the artists will transform the entire museum into one immersive artwork that explores the history of people and place in terms of cultural legacy\, historical narrative\, and social constructs. \nThe project uses objects culled from the diverse archives and collections across Tulane’s campus\, including art\, sound\, documents of record\, material culture\, and artifacts. It activates objects held by the Hogan Jazz Archive\, The Latin American Library\, Louisiana Research Collection\, Middle American Research Institute\, Newcomb Art Museum\, Newcomb College Institute\, Royal D. Suttkus Fish Collection / Tulane University Biodiversity Research Institute\, Southeastern Architectural Archive\, Tulane Law Library\, and Tulane University Archives\, among other campus collections as well as the Amistad Research Center\, shifting the lexicon of historical meanings into one work of art. \nEMPIRE critically examines the principles of archives and anthropology to interrogate the ways histories are told\, remembered\, and revised. The immersive artwork considers the historical and contemporary effects that colonialism\, slavery\, trade\, and tourism have had on the movement of culture across and beyond borders to better understand the geographic and cultural position of New Orleans in relationship to Africa\, the Caribbean\, and Latin America. EMPIRE invites viewers to creatively interpret the displayed objects\, their connections\, and their juxtapositions to generate new meanings.

SUMMARY:Free Exhibition Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Newcomb Art Museum at noon on the Third Thursday and Second Saturday of each month for a free guided tour of the exhibition Per(Sister): Incarcerated Women of Louisiana. \nAbout the exhibition:\nNewcomb Art Museum has partnered with formerly incarcerated women\, community organizations\, stakeholders\, and those directly impacted by the prison system to create the exhibition Per(Sister)\, which is intended to share the stories of currently and formerly incarcerated women in Louisiana\, and shine a light on the myriad issues as identified and expressed by the women themselves. \nThe experiences of incarcerated women are often unknown\, overlooked\, dismissed\, or misunderstood. Per(Sister) presents the personal and intimate stories\, in their own voices and in their own terms\, of thirty women that persist in their drive for the integral survival of their mind\, body\, and soul. \nTheir stories come to life through the pairing of a “persister” and an artist who created a work inspired by her story\, other stories take the shape of voice recordings\, or handwritten messages\, all with the intention of challenging misconceptions and uninformed assumptions. By building awareness of the situations arising before\, during and after incarceration\, the exhibition Per(Sister) seeks to find common ground and pathways for society to empathetically move forward together. \nPer(Sister) examines themes such as the root causes of women’s incarceration\, the social impact of long-term incarcerated mothers\, the psychological and physical toll of incarceration\, and the challenges and opportunities of reentry for formerly incarcerated women. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Becoming Danielle Metz: Life after Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Amistad Research Center and the Newcomb Museum of Art of Tulane University presents: \nBecoming Danielle Metz: Life after Incarceration \nAccording to the American Civil Liberties Union\, there are over 200\,000 women and girls imprisoned for nonviolent crimes as a result of the criminal system’s war on drugs. In addition to those serving sentences\, an additional one million are trapped in a system of probation and parole with very little support services available to assist them with transitioning back into society. On Tuesday April 3rd\, we will hear from Danielle Metz about her experience in the criminal system\, being granted clemency by President Barack Obama\, and the reentry process. Carmen James Randolph\, vice president of programs for the Greater New Orleans Foundation\, will join Metz in conversation about her incredible journey. \nAbout our presenters \nDanielle Metz is one of the 1\,715 inmates President Barack Obama granted clemency before leaving the White House in 2017. On that particular day\, a Tuesday in August\, Obama commuted the sentences of a then-record 111 inmates. The early releases were the former president’s response to drug laws he deemed unusually harsh to nonviolent offenders like Metz. In 1994\, this wife and mother of two was sentenced to three life sentences – plus 20 years – on four counts of drug dealing and conspiracy. Category 3 federal sentencing guidelines demanded the stiff punishment\, although Metz had never been in trouble with the law before. Her husband\, the alleged ringleader\, is still in prison. \nCarmen James Randolph joined the Greater New Orleans Foundation in February of 2014 as Vice President for Programs. Carmen previously worked at the Washington-based Eugene & Agnes E. Meyer Foundation where she was for the past 15 years including three years as senior program officer in education. While at the Meyer Foundation\, Carmen led various award-winning initiatives to support a wide range of work including education organizing\, charter school improvement\, and post-secondary education reform. \nRegistration is free\, please RSVP on Eventbrite. \nAbout the Amistad Research Center: \nThe Amistad Research Center (ARC) is committed to collecting\, preserving\, and providing open access to original materials that reference the social and cultural importance of America’s ethnic and racial history\, the African Diaspora\, human relations\, and civil rights. \nARC houses more than 800 collections\, including:15 million original manuscripts and rare documents ranging from the 1780s to present;2\,000+ periodicals dating from the early 19th century; 250\,000 photographs dating from 1859; 400+ oral histories by musicians\, civil rights activists\, writers\, military figures and community members;400 works of African and African American art\, including works by several internationally renowned 19th and 20th century African American masters; and 25\,000+ monographs\, books\, articles and dissertations on the history of African-American and ethnic groups. \nAbout our partner: \nThe Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University builds on the Newcomb College legacy of education\, social enterprise\, and artistic experience. Presenting inspiring exhibitions and programs that engage communities both on and off campus\, the Museum fosters the creative exchange of ideas and cross-disciplinary collaborations around innovative art and design. The Museum preserves and advances scholarship on the Newcomb and Tulane art collections.
