SUMMARY:Becoming Danielle Metz: Life after Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Amistad Research Center and the Newcomb Museum of Art of Tulane University presents: \nBecoming Danielle Metz: Life after Incarceration \nAccording to the American Civil Liberties Union\, there are over 200\,000 women and girls imprisoned for nonviolent crimes as a result of the criminal system’s war on drugs. In addition to those serving sentences\, an additional one million are trapped in a system of probation and parole with very little support services available to assist them with transitioning back into society. On Tuesday April 3rd\, we will hear from Danielle Metz about her experience in the criminal system\, being granted clemency by President Barack Obama\, and the reentry process. Carmen James Randolph\, vice president of programs for the Greater New Orleans Foundation\, will join Metz in conversation about her incredible journey. \nAbout our presenters \nDanielle Metz is one of the 1\,715 inmates President Barack Obama granted clemency before leaving the White House in 2017. On that particular day\, a Tuesday in August\, Obama commuted the sentences of a then-record 111 inmates. The early releases were the former president’s response to drug laws he deemed unusually harsh to nonviolent offenders like Metz. In 1994\, this wife and mother of two was sentenced to three life sentences – plus 20 years – on four counts of drug dealing and conspiracy. Category 3 federal sentencing guidelines demanded the stiff punishment\, although Metz had never been in trouble with the law before. Her husband\, the alleged ringleader\, is still in prison. \nCarmen James Randolph joined the Greater New Orleans Foundation in February of 2014 as Vice President for Programs. Carmen previously worked at the Washington-based Eugene & Agnes E. Meyer Foundation where she was for the past 15 years including three years as senior program officer in education. While at the Meyer Foundation\, Carmen led various award-winning initiatives to support a wide range of work including education organizing\, charter school improvement\, and post-secondary education reform. \nRegistration is free\, please RSVP on Eventbrite. \nAbout the Amistad Research Center: \nThe Amistad Research Center (ARC) is committed to collecting\, preserving\, and providing open access to original materials that reference the social and cultural importance of America’s ethnic and racial history\, the African Diaspora\, human relations\, and civil rights. \nARC houses more than 800 collections\, including:15 million original manuscripts and rare documents ranging from the 1780s to present;2\,000+ periodicals dating from the early 19th century; 250\,000 photographs dating from 1859; 400+ oral histories by musicians\, civil rights activists\, writers\, military figures and community members;400 works of African and African American art\, including works by several internationally renowned 19th and 20th century African American masters; and 25\,000+ monographs\, books\, articles and dissertations on the history of African-American and ethnic groups. \nAbout our partner: \nThe Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University builds on the Newcomb College legacy of education\, social enterprise\, and artistic experience. Presenting inspiring exhibitions and programs that engage communities both on and off campus\, the Museum fosters the creative exchange of ideas and cross-disciplinary collaborations around innovative art and design. The Museum preserves and advances scholarship on the Newcomb and Tulane art collections.

SUMMARY:Slow Art Saturday
DESCRIPTION:Slow Art Day is April 6! \nThis Saturday\, museums around the world will come together to celebrate Slow Art Day – a global event with a simple mission: help people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art. When people look slowly at a piece of art they make discoveries – and the most important discovery they make is that they can see and experience art without an expert or expertise! We invite you to take part in this day of appreciating art by joining us for any or all of the following activities from 11 am to 3 pm. \n\nBlindfolded Drawing – Take part in a collaborative drawing exercise where one person describes an artwork to someone else who draws the artwork not by sight but by the description.\nSensory Tours – Led by museum staff use your sense of smell\, taste\, touch\, and sound to explore artworks in the exhibition. \nOne Piece at a Time – Instead of trying to go through a whole gallery in ten minutes\, pick just one piece and spend ten minutes observing it. Bring a friend (or make one at the museum) and have a discussion about the piece together after – see what kind of similar or different observations you both make!\n\nPlus\, enjoy 10% off all books from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday! \nPlease note: Saturday\, April 6 is also Crawfest at Tulane so there will be no parking allowed on campus. The museum is an easy walk from the St. Charles streetcar line and there is plenty of street parking in the neighborhood. If you have any questions – please feel free to call 504.865.5328 or emailtfriel@tulane.edu.

SUMMARY:Free Exhibition Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Newcomb Art Museum at noon on the Third Thursday and Second Saturday of each month for a free guided tour of the exhibition Per(Sister): Incarcerated Women of Louisiana. \nAbout the exhibition:\nNewcomb Art Museum has partnered with formerly incarcerated women\, community organizations\, stakeholders\, and those directly impacted by the prison system to create the exhibition Per(Sister)\, which is intended to share the stories of currently and formerly incarcerated women in Louisiana\, and shine a light on the myriad issues as identified and expressed by the women themselves. \nThe experiences of incarcerated women are often unknown\, overlooked\, dismissed\, or misunderstood. Per(Sister) presents the personal and intimate stories\, in their own voices and in their own terms\, of thirty women that persist in their drive for the integral survival of their mind\, body\, and soul. \nTheir stories come to life through the pairing of a “persister” and an artist who created a work inspired by her story\, other stories take the shape of voice recordings\, or handwritten messages\, all with the intention of challenging misconceptions and uninformed assumptions. By building awareness of the situations arising before\, during and after incarceration\, the exhibition Per(Sister) seeks to find common ground and pathways for society to empathetically move forward together. \nPer(Sister) examines themes such as the root causes of women’s incarceration\, the social impact of long-term incarcerated mothers\, the psychological and physical toll of incarceration\, and the challenges and opportunities of reentry for formerly incarcerated women. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Email museum@tulane.edu or call 504.314.2406 with questions.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Exhibition Tour

SUMMARY:Free Performance by Michaela A. Harrison
DESCRIPTION:Join the Newcomb Art Museum for a free performance from New-Orleans Vocalist Michaela A. Harrison as she sings and performs in response to themes presented in the exhibition “Per(Sister): Incarcerated Women of Louisiana.” \nAbout Michaela A. Harrison:\nMichaela A. Harrison is a New Orleans-based vocalist who has performed nationally and internationally in theatrical productions\, with various bands and musical collectives and with the all-female trio Mother Tongue. Since the disbanding of Mother Tongue in 2008\, Michaela has established an ever-growing following as a solo artist at local venues such as Sweet Lorraine’s Jazz Club\, where she is featured weekly during Sunday brunch\, the Juju Bag Café\, where she sings on Friday evenings\, and Ashé Cultural Arts Center\, where she performs regularly for community gatherings and special events. While comfortable with a full band\, a choir or an orchestra\, Michaela often sings with a guitar as her only accompaniment\, working regularly with Brazilian virtuoso Marcio Pereira and local favorites Carl LeBlanc and Todd Duke.\nMichaela began singing in the Baptist church at age 5. Her musical style incorporates her gospel roots as well as a diverse range of genres including jazz\, blues\, R & B\, soul\, samba\, MPB and African traditional music. As a protégé of Bernice Johnson Reagon\, founder of Sweet Honey In The Rock\, Michaela is well-versed in spirituals\, work songs\, and African American protest music from the Civil Rights era. With a four-octave range and a vocal quality that runs the gamut from pristine sweetness to fiercely powerful belting\, Michaela has often been compared to such greats as Minnie Riperton and Mahalia Jackson\, though she maintains a signature style that distinguishes her voice as easily recognizable no matter what she is singing. Her soulful\, heartfelt delivery of both covers and original music has often moved audiences to tears.\nHolding a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Service and a Master’s in Africana Studies\, Michaela has also studied and lived in East Africa and Brazil. Fluent in French and Portuguese\, and familiar with Spanish and Swahili\, Michaela has an expanded repertoire of world music and renders songs in their original language. She infuses her performances with insightful commentary based on her multi-cultural perspective\, simultaneously uplifting and educating audiences.\nMichaela has performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on several occasions\, with John Boutté\, Kermit Ruffins\, Bill Summers\, Percussion\, Inc. and Kumbuka African Drum and Dance Ensemble\, as well as at the Essence Festival with Mother Tongue. She has also sung at venues in Washington\, DC\, New York\, Atlanta and California. International performances have included festivals\, clubs and private events in Brazil\, Jamaica\, France\, Germany\, Italy\, England\, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Since 2008\, she has appeared in three theatrical productions: “Rent” at Le Petit Theatre in the French Quarter\, “The Women of Brewster Place” at Anthony Bean Theater and “Swimming Upstream.” She has recorded with members of Sweet Honey in the Rock\, Bill Summers/Los Hombres Calientes and\, most recently\, Kermit Ruffins. She and Kermit perform the classic duet “Baby It’s Cold Outside” on his 2009 Christmas CD\, “Have A Crazy Cool Christmas\,” which attracted nationwide acclaim. Michaela’s first “solo” CD\, “Love’s Divine\,” was released July 1\, 2010.
