Public Programs
The Newcomb Art Museum offers guided tours and an array of public programs, all free of charge. Designed around the salient themes and images of each exhibition, such activities speak to an array of community and campus interests. Programs include lectures, symposia, artist-led family activities, public tours, performances, and studio demonstrations.
Fall/Winter 2024 PROGRAMS
Tuesday, Sept. 17 – Galleries reopen at 10:00 AM
Explore the fall exhibition featuring Bethany Collins, Arlette Quỳnh-Anh Trần, and Clarissa Tossin. The Prospect.6 reception is Nov. 3.
Sundays in Sept. and Oct. – Baby ArtsPlay!™ & Family Hours The museum closes at 12:30 pm on these days: 9/22, 9/29, 10/13, 10/20, and 10/27
10:30 – 11 am: YALA presents Baby ArtsPlay!™ classes for infants, toddlers, and their caregivers. Each free class engages early learners with movement, music, and socialization for your young ones. Register at ya4la.org/events
11:15 am – 12:15 pm: Join us for a scavenger hunt and art activities.
Sunday, Oct. 6. – Family Day
10:30 – 11 am: Baby ArtsPlay!™
12 – 3 pm: Drop in for an afternoon of artmaking (ages 4–17) and a drawing workshop (18 and up, all levels). Led by Raina Benoit, the drawing workshop “Awakening the Senses” takes place from 1 – 3 pm and requires an RSVP. Register at https://bit.ly/4eAATO2. Wednesday, Oct. 30 – Symposium, Global Port Cities: Saigon–New Orleans Connections
12 – 2 pm: New Orleans and Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City have so much in common despite their different histories. Join staff from the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University and School of Liberal Arts Dean Brian Edwards – project leader of the Global Port Cities initiative – in dialog with artists, curators, and environmental scientists from both cities to explore common challenges and creative possibilities across these geographies.

All programming takes place inside the galleries at Newcomb Art Museum, and a light lunch will be served.
Sunday, Nov. 3 – P.6 Opening and Panel
10 am – 12 pm: This conversation features Tambourine Cypher Part I artists Ashley Teamer, Rosalie Washington, Gladney, and Aaron Washington. It is moderated by Dr. Kyle DeCoste from the Newcomb Department of Music. The event explores the historical and cultural significance of the tambourine in New Orleans celebrations. Teamer’s project is commissioned in partnership with Prospect.6, Arts New Orleans, and the City of New Orleans Percent for Art Program. Light refreshments to follow.
Friday, Nov. 8 – Homecoming Open House
10:30 am – 3 pm: Enjoy Tulane’s homecoming with a close look at our permanent collection of Newcomb Pottery from 11 am to 1 pm. Take a tour of the P.6 exhibition, grab snacks, and explore other art activities within our building. Note that on-campus parking is not available this day.
COMMUNITY PARTNER PROGRAMS
Saturday, Nov. 9 – New Orleans Clay Festival
10 am – 4 pm: The museum is proud to partner on this event, which offers a platform for artists working in clay to present and sell their work. Location: Left Bank, 2401 Tchoupitoulas St. Check out @neworleansclayfest on Instagram for more information.
Thursday, Nov. 14 – Amanda Williams Artist Talk
6 pm: The 2024 Garrard Lecture is presented by Newcomb Art Department and Prospect New Orleans. Location: Freeman Auditorium, Woldenberg Art Center. As part of the citywide Prospect.6 art triennial, Williams’ work is presently on view at the New Orleans African American Museum and the Xavier University Art Village.
Monday, Nov 18 – María Magdalena Campos-Pons Keynote
5:30 pm: The keynote speaker at Tulane University’s International Education Week 2024 is MacArthur Fellow María Magdalena Campos-Pons. Location: Freeman Auditorium, Woldenberg Art Center. To RSVP and learn more about this program check out https://global.tulane.edu/international-education-week-2024
Mon, Jan 20, 2025 – Calling All Tambourines
5:00 pm: P.6 Artist Ashley Teamer is Calling All Tambourines! We invite the New Orleans community to join in celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the legacies of our rich musical histories and heritages by convening for a collective tambourine chorus at sunset. There will be singing and tambourine playing. Come join us at Teamer’s sculpture Tambourine Cypress in Lemann Playground! Children’s choir New Voices will perform. Bring your tambourines! Location: Lemann Playground, 628 N. Claiborne Avenue
