Public Programs

The Newcomb Art Museum offers guided tours and an array of public programs, all free of charge. Designed around the salient themes and images of each exhibition, such activities speak to an array of community and campus interests. Programs include lectures, symposia, artist-led family activities, public tours, performances, and studio demonstrations.

SPRING 2024 PROGRAMS

Thursday, January 18. 5:30 – 8:00 PM
Opening Reception & Talk
Join us as we celebrate the opening of our three Spring exhibitions! The museum opens at 5pm for a preview, followed by a public talk at 6pm on William Edmondson by scholar Jennifer Marshall, PhD. Refreshments will be served following the talk.

Thursday, February 29. 6:00 PM
Victory Workers Curator and Archivist Discussion
Exhibition curator Kendyll S. Gross will be in conversation with Assistant Librarian Vincent Barraza from Xavier University Special Collections and Curator Paula Allen from Amistad Research Center. They’ll discuss their respective collections and how they work to make them available to the public. The museum will be open late from 5:00 to 6:00pm in advance of this special program.

Tuesday, March 12. 6:00 PM
Donté K. Hayes: Future Artifacts
Donté K. Hayes, a featured artist in Legacy Traces, will discuss his practice as a ceramicist. The artist states, “Artifacts are a tangible history which have the capacity to retain, transform, destroy, erase and evoke lost knowledge.” The museum will be open late from 5:00 to 6:00pm in advance of this special program. Lecture location: Freeman Auditorium. This program is supported in part by the Dorothy Beckemeyer Skau Art and Music Fund.

Wednesday, March 13. 9:00 AM – 1:00PM
Live Studio Demo with Donté K. Hayes, presented by Newcomb Art Department
Donté K. Hayes, a featured artist in Legacy Traces, will demonstrate a selection of his studio techniques.
Location: Room 122, Ceramics Studio.

Saturday, May 11, 12pm – 3pm
Crescent City Clay Connection
Newcomb Art Museum and the ceramics department at Tulane University are bringing together New Orleans based practitioners to celebrate the Crescent City’s unique clay culture. Come mingle with the artists and check out the beautiful ceramic artworks on display! Light refreshments will be served.

Gathering Space
Throughout the Spring, one gallery will be used as a gathering space. We encourage visitors to use this space in a way that is meaningful to their visit, including for club meetings. We also welcome ideas for how it could be used, so please reach out to tfriel@tulane.edu to discuss!
