Fair Use in the Visual Arts: It Just Got Easier

February 18, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

A presentation by Patricia Aufderheide
Professor of Communication Studies, American University
Founder & Senior Research Fellow, Center for Media & Social Impact

When and how can you publish a book or journal article without getting permission for illustrations? Can you use unlicensed images in your museum’s promotional materials? What issues do digital exhibitions raise? Can you use others’ work, legally and ethically, in making your own? When can you use unlicensed copyrighted material in digitizing and displaying your collection, in exhibiting and teaching about New Orleans’ creative legacy?

The copyright doctrine of fair use is central to all these, and more questions, addressed by Aufderheide. She will explain the power of the College Art Association’s most recent resource, the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts, and show how it’s already changed visual arts practice.

Free and open to the public.
